What is the SURFSET® workout method?

The SURFSET® workout method is a fitness program inspired by the sport of Surfing. SURFSET® is the world's most unique workout, combining elements of aerobic fat burning, lean muscle build, and balance & core training in one 45 minute routine on top of a custom made unstable surfboard. SURFSET® focuses heavily on the core, where all of our strength and body control stem from.
Imagine combining the cardio benefits of Spinning® with the muscle toning of TRX® training & the core and balance benefits of working out on a Bosu® ball. Now throw in some waves & make it fun!

What are the benefits of SURFSET®?

SURFSET® is designed to combine the benefits of cardio training, strength training & balance training in one workout. This means improved aerobic conditioning, lean muscle build, increased core strength, agility, power, stability, flexibility & balance.
We focus on athletic movements that incorporate all major muscle groups & the tiny stabilizer muscles that give your body shape & definition. SURFSET® will help define your triceps for shapely upper arms, strengthen your obliques for a tight, toned torso, & work your legs in isometric contractions for that long, lean surfer look.

Why is surfing such a good workout?

Surfing is an extremely athletic sport. It works all major muscle groups in a dynamic environment that demands extreme focus & core strength. Cardio from paddling & explosive popup movements, isometric contractions of the legs to carve and control the board, and of course balance.

Does using the SURFSET® Board feel like real surfing?

Yes! The Board was created to perfectly mimic the feeling & the physical demands of surfing. The unique side to side motion of the board feels just like floating atop the water on a surfboard, and allows you to train the same muscles as a surfer without the ocean. Obviously we do not have the unpredictability of the water but we can always pretend!

Who can benefit from SURFSET® classes?

Anyone who wants to break out of their traditional workout routine and shake things up to start seeing some real results will love SURFSET®. The adjustability of the board and built in progression of the program makes SURFSET® an awesome class for the true beginner to the extreme athlete. 

Does SURFSET® have different types of workouts?

Yes! There are 4 different Signature Sessions that focus on different elements of fitness. At The Surf Studio we also provide other styles of classes and combined classes of the originals.

BALANCE: Learn the fundamentals of instability training, improving core strength, balance, flexibility & coordination.

BUILD: Build lean muscle with compound, multi joint movements on the Board. We introduce resistance bands & other strength training implements for max results.

BURN: Torch fat & tone your core with high-intensity intervals on the Board. 

BLEND: This fast-paced program combines elements of Balance, Strength & High-Intensity Sprints with an extreme core focus. This is our most advanced program, building lean muscle, core strength, stability, agility & power.

How long are SURFSET® classes?

Classes are 45 minutes or we have 30 minute express classes, structured in high intensity intervals for maximum fat burn & lean muscle build. Every class finishes with a custom cool down to build balance & flexibility.

How many times a week should I take SURFSET® classes?

SURFSET® is a truly comprehensive full body workout that covers all of the fitness bases and you can do it 5-6 times a week if you'd like! Of course its always beneficial to shake up your exercise routine and incorporate a few different style workouts, so its definitely up to you how many classes you'd like to take. Even switch it up with The Surf Studios Yoga or Circuit Training offered.

Is the SURFSET® Board suitable for children?

Yes! The Board is a fun & safe way for kids to get in shape and learn to surf at the same time. The workouts are low impact and only use resistance bands & bodyweight so as not to stunt growth or lead to injury.  

Can I use the SURFSET® Board if I am not very fit or have not worked out in a long time?

Yes! The Board is adjustable for all levels, even for someone with less than ideal balance and a lower fitness level. The reason SURFSET® was created was to inspire people who have been disillusioned and bored by other workouts. So even if its been years since you've stuck with an exercise program, the boards will engage your body & mind to elevate your fitness.

What should I wear to a SURFSET® class?

Wear something comfortable, similar to what you would wear to a Yoga/Pilates/Aerobics class. We recommend tight fitting pants or shorts, so as to avoid tripping when popping up on the board. No shoes necessary (we like to keep it authentic!) 

What if I have an injury or I'm pregnant?

The Board is a wonderful rehab tool for bad joints and tissue injuries, but only if used under the guidance of a professional. The workouts are high intensity but low impact, meaning you will get all of the physical benefits without damage and overuse of fragile joints. We have had several pregnant women enjoy training on the Board, but it is very core intensive so its best to consult with your doctor first.

Can I use the SURFSET® Board if I have never surfed?

Yes! The Board is an awesome way to introduce your body to the movements of surfing. It may be a challenge for you to work on the most difficult setting, but you can start at a beginner level and work your way up as your balance, core strength & surfing muscle memory improve.
